Can you use a Google Voice number for WhatsApp? Usually no, and the fix takes 20 minutes

更新于 由 SMS ActiveR 团队撰写

You entered your Google Voice number into WhatsApp, and nothing came. Or worse, the screen said the number cannot be used. That is not a glitch on your phone, and waiting longer will not help.

WhatsApp checks what kind of number you typed in. Google Voice hands out numbers over the internet, and that is exactly the kind WhatsApp treats with suspicion. Below: why it happens, what to use instead, and what to do when the code still refuses to arrive.

Every quote here comes from the company’s own help pages, checked in September 2026.

WhatsApp rejects most Google Voice numbers

WhatsApp screens numbers by origin, not by carrier name. A Google Voice number is issued over the internet, not by a mobile network. Numbers of that type are the cheapest way to create accounts in bulk. So they get filtered — before your code is ever sent.

Three reasons WhatsApp turns down a Google Voice number at registration
Three walls between a Google Voice number and a WhatsApp account.

Why WhatsApp turns down a number handed out over the internet

The logic is anti-spam, not anti-you. A number tied to a SIM card costs someone money every month, which makes mass sign-ups expensive. An internet number costs nothing and can be replaced in seconds, so large services screen out whole ranges of them.

Your account is not the target. The range your number belongs to is.

This also explains the part that feels unfair. The number worked yesterday for a friend, it works for calls, it receives texts from people — and still WhatsApp turns it down. Nothing about your number changed. The range it sits in got flagged.

What TextFree, Hushed and Burner say about WhatsApp in their own help pages

This is not guesswork, and it is not specific to Google. Every company in this category publishes the same warning, and two of them name WhatsApp outright:

Certain services, such as WhatsApp, may prevent the delivery of verification codes to VoIP numbers like ours.
— Pinger, in its TextFree help centre

The others say it in their own words:

  • Hushed — its numbers are not guaranteed to work with third-party verification, naming social media, banking, email and apps.
  • Burner — warns that sites including Amazon, Google and Instagram may reject its numbers.
  • GoSimless — says services including WhatsApp may impose extra checks on numbers that look virtual.

One provider says it in its own terms of service. CallHippo does not encourage using a virtual number for verification messages at all. When the seller writes that about its own product, the pattern is real.

Repeated attempts make it worse, not better

Requesting the code over and over is the common reaction, and it costs you. WhatsApp limits how often a number can ask for a code, and after several tries it locks further attempts for hours.

So the practical rule is two attempts, then change the number. A third and fourth request on the same Google Voice number will not produce a different answer.

Personal Google Voice numbers are only offered in the US

There is a second wall, and it stops many people before the first one. Google’s own help page is blunt about who can get a personal number:

These versions of Google Voice don’t require a paid Workspace subscription and are only available in the US.
— Google Voice Help

Google also reclaims a number that sits unused, leaving 45 days to get it back. For a number attached to WhatsApp, that is the whole risk in one sentence.

Get the WhatsApp code on a 20-minute number from SV Number

The fix is a number from a real mobile carrier, rented for the few minutes the sign-up takes. SV Number (sms-verification-number.com) rents one for 20 minutes for $0.99, and it belongs to you alone for that time.

The code appears on the page you rented the number on.

Pick the country, rent the number, read the code on the page

The whole thing takes four steps and no software. You never install anything, never register with a carrier, and the number stops existing on its own. What you do is choose, enter, and read:

  1. Choose WhatsApp from the service list.
  2. Choose the country the number should come from.
  3. Enter that number in WhatsApp and request the code.
  4. Read the code on the page. It appears there, not in an app.

Country matters more than people expect. Some sign-ups only accept local numbers, and here you pick the country before you pay rather than after.

If no SMS arrives in 20 minutes, the $0.99 goes back to your balance

Nobody can promise that every single registration goes through, and anyone who does is selling you something. What can be promised is narrower: you do not pay for a number that failed. The rental ends, the money returns to your balance, and you take another number.

The rented number receives SMS only and does not make calls

Here is the honest boundary. A rented number takes the WhatsApp code and nothing else. You cannot call from it, you cannot hold a conversation on it, and after 20 minutes it is gone.

That is fine for creating the account, since WhatsApp then works over your internet connection. It is the wrong tool if you wanted a second number to actually talk on.

What happens to the account after the rental ends

The account stays yours and keeps working. WhatsApp ties it to the device and the login, not to a live SIM. Once registration is done, messages and calls run over the internet as usual.

One thing to handle on the same day: turn on two-step verification with a PIN, in Settings, Account, Two-step verification. If the number is ever reissued to someone else, that PIN is what stops them taking the account. Add an email there too, so you can recover it yourself.

What to do when the WhatsApp code still does not arrive

Sometimes the number is fine and the delivery is slow, or a small mistake in the form blocks it. Before you decide the number failed, work through four checks — they cost nothing and solve most cases.

Four checks to run when a WhatsApp verification code does not arrive
Four checks, in order, before you give up on a number.
  1. Wait two or three minutes, then request the code again. The first attempt is often still in transit.
  2. Use the Call me option instead. WhatsApp dictates the code by voice, and voice sometimes lands where SMS does not.
  3. Check the country code. A leading zero after the country code is the most common typo, and the message goes nowhere.
  4. If WhatsApp says the number is already registered, take another one. Someone used that number before you.

Only after all four is it worth trying a different country. Delivery differs by country far more than most guides admit — we measured it across 541 app-and-country pairs — and switching is faster than arguing with the app.

Does WhatsApp Business accept a Google Voice number?

WhatsApp Business runs the same check on the number, so a Google Voice number fails there for the same reason. The app is different, the screening is not, and paying for a Workspace plan does not change how the number looks from outside.

The Call me option is how landlines register

Business accounts are often set up on office landlines, which cannot receive SMS at all. That is what the voice option exists for: WhatsApp calls the number and reads the code aloud.

Worth trying on a Google Voice number too, since it takes ten seconds. Just do not treat it as a fix — the number is still the kind WhatsApp screens.

A business number is worth registering properly

There is a difference in stakes here. A personal account you can move to another number in a minute. A business account carries your customer chats, your catalogue and your away messages. Lose the number and you lose the thread with everyone who wrote to you.

So register a business account on a number you control long-term: the company mobile, or the office landline through the voice option. Keep the rented number for testing, or for a second account.

Free Google Voice against a $0.99 rented number, for one sign-up

Put both against the same job — getting one WhatsApp account registered — and the comparison is short. Free is not free of conditions, and a dollar buys a number built for exactly this.

Google Voice Rented number
Price Free $0.99 per rental
Where you can get it US only you pick the country
Type of number issued over the internet from a mobile carrier
WhatsApp code often rejected refunded if it fails
If you go quiet number reclaimed, 45 days to recover rental ends, nothing attached
Calls and texts yes no, SMS only

The rental wins on one job and loses on the other. For a number you will talk on for months, Google Voice is the better product. Two conditions: you are in the US, and you keep it active.

Which country to pick when you rent

Two rules cover most cases. Pick the country you actually live in when the account will be used there, because some services look at whether the number matches the region. Pick whatever is cheapest and available when the account is disposable.

If a code does not arrive on one country, switching is the fastest next move — faster than repeating attempts on the same one. Delivery is a property of the pair, the service and the country, not of the service alone.

When a second-number app fits better than a rental

If you want a number of your own, for conversations and callbacks over months, none of this applies. That is a subscription purchase, and apps like Hushed, Burner or TextFree are built for it — from about $6.99 a month.

Their help pages still do not promise verification codes

Buy one for talking, not for sign-ups. The companies selling these numbers say so themselves. Their support articles state that third-party verification is not guaranteed, and two of them name WhatsApp directly.

So the split is simple. A number to talk on — buy an app. A code to finish one registration — rent a carrier number for twenty minutes. We compared the apps themselves in TextNow alternatives for sign-up codes and calls, with prices and what each vendor admits about verification.

Questions people ask about Google Voice and WhatsApp

These come up in every thread on the subject. Where a company states something about its own service, that statement is used here instead of an opinion.

Why can’t I use my Google Voice number for WhatsApp?

Because of the type of number, not your account. Google Voice numbers are handed out over the internet, and WhatsApp screens that category to keep out bulk sign-ups. The code is usually blocked before it is ever sent to you.

Is a Google Voice number a real mobile number?

It is a real, working number, but it is not issued by a mobile network. It routes calls and texts over the internet, which is precisely the difference sign-up forms check for.

Can I get a Google Voice number outside the US?

Not on a personal plan. Google states that these versions are only available in the US. Outside the US you need a Workspace subscription, which covers a limited list of countries and costs money per user.

How do I get a Google Voice number for free?

With a Google account and a US phone number to verify against. That second requirement catches most people out: you need a working number before Google gives you one.

What kind of number receives a WhatsApp verification SMS?

A number from a mobile carrier. That is what the rental gives you for 20 minutes. It is also why a code lands there when it does not land on an app number.

Will WhatsApp ban an account registered on a rented number?

Registration is not what gets accounts banned — behaviour is. Bulk messaging strangers, mass invites and reported spam are what trigger it. An account created on a carrier number and used normally sits in the same place as any other.

What does This number cannot be used mean?

It means WhatsApp recognised the number as a type it does not accept for registration, usually an internet number. It is not about your device or your country, and reinstalling the app will not change the answer.

Can I use a Google Voice number for WhatsApp Business?

Usually no, for the same reason as the regular app. Business registration checks the number the same way. The Call me option is worth ten seconds of your time, but it does not change what kind of number you have.
